The “岚” mask
was a projects from Wood One, a Rhode Island School of Design class for Industrial Design sophomores. The course focuses on design and craft in wood using primarily handtools.

The brief for this project was to use handtools to carve out a mask.

My design inspiration was totally based on my mother, mainly focusing on her Chinese zodiac animal - dog, and her name. In order to achieve a sense of 3D formation, I decide to design and carve out the pattern on the mask layer by layer. To avoid overwhelming complexity, I sand out all of the carving marks, and made most of the patterns symmetrical.

This is a "岚"dog mask that is only for my mother, as dog is her Chinese zodiac character and "岚" is her first name.
